New BBC Director-General Matt Brittin will appear before MPs for the first time next week as Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport Committee continues its inquiry into the future of the corporation ahead of the next Royal Charter.
Brittin and BBC Chair Dr Samir Shah will give evidence on Wednesday, July 8, in what is expected to be one of the most significant sessions of the Charter Review process before ministers set out plans for the BBC’s future from 2028.
MPs are expected to question the pair on the future of the licence fee and possible alternative funding models, as well as the BBC’s role in an increasingly digital media market. The session is also likely to cover the broadcaster’s use of technology, relationships with online platforms, and the future of public service broadcasting.
The committee is also expected to examine editorial standards and public trust following a series of high-profile controversies, along with the implications of the BBC’s recent programme cuts and job losses announced last month.
It is the penultimate evidence session in the committee’s inquiry before Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy appears on July 13. MPs are expected to publish recommendations after the summer recess to help shape the next Charter, which is due to come into force in 2028.
