Would-be global cellular connectivity business AST SpaceMobile says that speeds of hundreds of Mb/s will be deployed in 5G via its Block 2 BlueBird satellites.

“AST SpaceMobile has already demonstrated in its Block 1 satellites speeds of 98 Mbps. With our Block 2 satellites, with the largest phased-array antennas in low earth orbit, we will provide speeds of hundreds of Mbps enabling real 5G connectivity from space,” said a statement made to the FCC by AST.

In a filing to the FCC, the satellite operator said: “AST SpaceMobile already has in production over 80 per cent of the Block 2 satellites with this frequency band (800 MHz), as well as all required ground infrastructure to enable commercial service across the continental US. AST has contracts in place to launch all of the satellites needed to provide service in this band across the country, consistent with [our] milestones.”
