Sateliot wants €150m in fresh funding

Spanish satellite business Sateliot is looking for €150 million of fresh funding in order to build and deploy 16 satellites in 2027. It plans a direct satellite-to-smartphone connectivity service by 2028.

Barcelona-based Sateliot already has a partner in Telefónica. The company announced a €100 million funding round in April, and this latest announcement increases that target sum.


The company already operates a network of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and plans to use the new funding to deploy 16 more over the next year. By early 2028, it expects to launch larger satellites capable of beaming 5G data, voice, and video directly to ordinary smartphones.

“A new opportunity has emerged: integrating 5G within a satellite,” CEO Jaume Sanpera told Bloomberg News.

Sateliot was founded in 2018 to connect IoT devices like shipping trackers and utility sensors via satellite. The smartphone shift represents a significant modification and expansion. The company is working with Telefonica on the technology for direct-to-device links and has partnerships with other network operators to provide coverage in remote areas.

Sateliot is still seeking a lead investor for the €100 million round and said the additional €50 million could be raised as debt. It anticipates up to 50 per cent public co-financing.
