Netflix has extended its agreement with Goalhanger to carry The Rest Is Football beyond the World Cup and through the Premier League season.

The two-year deal will take the partnership through to UEFA Euro 2028, which will be staged across the UK and Ireland. Netflix will carry new episodes every Monday and Friday from August, with Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards appearing across the 40-week Premier League and Champions League season. The presentation team was previously a part of the BBC’s long-running Match of the Day, where Shearer and Richards still contribute.

The Rest Is Football moved onto Netflix during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when the trio recorded a 40-day run of daily episodes from New York. Netflix said the series appeared in its UK Daily Top 10 TV chart every day during the tournament, peaking at No. 1.

The show will continue to be produced by Goalhanger, whose other titles include The Rest Is History and The Rest Is Politics. The Rest Is Football has more than seven million monthly streams as a podcast.

Gary Lineker said the Netflix version would sit alongside the regular podcast output. “We had a brilliant time making the show during the World Cup, and the response was incredible, so it’s great to be back on Netflix every week throughout the Premier League season,” he said. “The Rest Is Football podcast will continue across the week too, while the Netflix show gives us another chance to get stuck into the biggest stories.”

Tony Pastor, co-founder of Goalhanger, said Netflix had allowed the producers to “preserve everything that makes the show special: sometimes serious, frequently hilarious, but always genuine and warm”.

The agreement reflects Netflix’s growing interest in sports-adjacent programming, including live events, documentaries and personality-led formats, rather than a wholesale move into regular domestic sports rights. The streamer has also been expanding video podcasts and creator-led programming as part of a wider effort to broaden engagement beyond scripted series and films.
