London-based financial institution Seraphim is launching a new specialty fund, its New Space ETF to tap into fresh opportunities in the space sector.

An initial 23 businesses will be part of the Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) including SpaceX, Rocket Lab, AST SpaceMobile and HawkEye 360.

Mark Boggett, the company’s chief executive, said the vehicle addressed a gap in the market as many existing ETFs in the sector were “tilted in the wrong direction”. He added: “If you look at the ETFs that are available in the market today, what they have is a big mixture of both ‘new space’ and ‘old space’ without much focus. But the old space companies… have got much, much bigger market capitalisations, which means that there’s an overweighting to old space and an underweighting to new space.”

He said that the new space economy, exemplified by SpaceX, was premised on the idea of making technology “as cheap as possible, rather than as reliable as possible, and then iterating until they get to a certain design that works reliably”.

As the sector matures, Seraphim says it believes that more space companies will go public in the coming years.
