Kenyan media company Royal Media Services (RMS) has partnered with XroadMedia to introduce personalised news feeds on its Citizen Digital platform, covering video, articles and audio.

The deployment follows a revamp of Citizen Digital, during which RMS was looking to extend personalisation beyond the statistical recommendations already used for video and written content. Following a trial, XroadMedia completed the integration in less than two months.

The new personalised landing page combines different media formats in vertical and horizontal content rails. Alongside individually tailored recommendations, the service also incorporates statistical recommendations for trending articles.

“Citizen Digital is the first news and entertainment app in the region to shift from an editor-driven newsfeed to a personalised one. A year on from rolling out personalization with XroadMedia, average sessions per active user are up 21.8% – users are returning more often and discovering much more than news,” said Chrisphine Otewa, Head of Digital Platforms at Royal Media Services.

Adolf Priodl, CEO of XroadMedia, added: “News organisations today are competing for attention across an increasing number of formats and readers expect the experience to feel relevant no matter where they engage. By unifying personalisation across services, we’re helping Royal Media surface the right content to each reader based on their interests and consumption habits. We’re excited to work with Royal Media and proud of how quickly our teams were able to bring this to life together.”

RMS operates television stations including Citizen TV and Inooro TV, as well as digital and publishing services in Kenya. Citizen TV is one of the country’s leading free-to-air television channels.

XroadMedia, based in Austria, provides AI-based personalisation solutions for media companies and has worked on more than 50 projects for operators, streaming services and broadcasters worldwide.
