Australia’s Nine Entertainment has deployed Bitmovin’s AI Scene Analysis across its Stan streaming service to automate the generation of scene-level metadata and improve its video-on-demand workflows.

The technology is integrated into Bitmovin’s VOD Encoder, allowing Nine to process Stan’s catalogue automatically and generate metadata based on the context of individual scenes. According to Bitmovin, this can support personalised viewing experiences, more targeted advertising and the identification of suitable ad insertion opportunities.

“Bitmovin’s AI Scene Analysis has transformed how our content team works. Ad placement approvals would have taken a lot of manual effort and time but can now move much faster, and this newfound speed and efficiency is letting us monetise titles across our catalogue much more easily,” said John Hogan, Chief Technology Officer at Nine.

Stan has more than 17,000 assets spanning locally produced content, reality TV, scripted programming and films.

Reinhard Grandl, Chief Product Officer at Bitmovin, added: “To truly enhance workflows and unlock revenue opportunities, it needed a solution capable of understanding the nuances presented by such a diverse catalogue. Bitmovin’s AI Scene Analysis is built to do exactly that, helping Nine turn content it already owns into new revenue, right inside the workflow their team already uses.”

Nine is using the generated metadata to support search and discovery as well as monetisation. The automated approach is also intended to reduce the manual work involved in reviewing content and approving potential advertising placements.

Austrian video streaming solutions provider Bitmovin is demonstrating its technology at IBC in Amsterdam from 11 to 14 September in Hall 5, stand 5.F72.
