Telefónica has reached a €1.65 billion agreement with DAZN that will allow its Movistar Plus+ pay-TV platform to continue offering 100 per cent of LaLiga matches in Spain for a further five seasons.

The non-exclusive agreement, running from the 2027/28 season to 2031/32, is worth an average €330 million per season, Telefónica has informed Spain’s stock market regulator CNMV.

Under the deal, Telefónica will distribute the DAZN LaLiga package, comprising five LaLiga EA Sports matches per matchday across all 38 rounds of the competition for the residential pay-TV market in Spain.

The agreement complements the rights secured directly by Telefónica from LaLiga. The telco signed the definitive contract for its own package last June, meaning Movistar Plus+ will continue to be able to offer its subscribers every match from Spain’s top-flight football competition.

The new DAZN agreement represents an increase on the previous arrangement between the two companies. Telefónica was paying around €280 million per season under the 2022-2027 deal, compared with €330 million under the new contract. However, the new package also covers five matches across all 38 matchdays, compared with 35 previously.

The deal further reinforces football as a cornerstone of Movistar Plus+’s premium content strategy. Telefónica also holds the Spanish rights to UEFA club competitions, including the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, until 2031.

For the 2027-2032 LaLiga rights cycle, Telefónica and DAZN secured the main residential packages, with each controlling 190 matches per season.

LaLiga’s domestic audiovisual rights for the five-year cycle were valued at €6.13 billion, up 9 per cent on the previous period, with residential First Division rights accounting for €5.25 billion.
