The UK’s National Security Strategic Investment Fund has provided £300 million (€350.2m) in funding to Oxford-based Open Cosmos, which manufactures low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites that deliver information to government.
Rafel Jorda Siquier, the founder and chief executive, said space infrastructure was “becoming as critical as energy, digital networks and transport”. The fresh cash will help accelerate the company’s development of space infrastructure.
Siquier added: “Connectivity and access to real time intelligence and information about what is happening is going to be one of the key assets for the growing economy. Being able to have all that intelligence in real time will make a huge difference to defence and security as well as companies in the energy sector, agriculture, logistics and mining.”
Open Cosmos has signed over $370 million in new contracts in the past four years and had five consecutive years of profitable growth. Open Cosmos is based at the Harwell Campus near Oxford.
As to Open Cosmos’s funding round, the space minister Baroness Lloyd of Effra said: “This landmark investment represents a major vote of confidence in Open Cosmos and Britain’s growing space sector. It is great to see the company continuing to grow, with investment that will help unlock high-skilled jobs and growth that will benefit people across the UK.”
