JustWatch is moving beyond streaming discovery with the launch of its own streaming service, JustWatch TV, across Europe, North America and Australasia in October.

The service will be integrated directly into the existing JustWatch apps and website and will combine free ad-supported streaming (AVOD), transactional rentals (TVOD) and an ad-free subscription option.

Initial markets are the United States, Canada, UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Australia and New Zealand.

Paramount, New Regency, Fremantle, Bleecker Street and Vortex Media are among the launch content partners, with further suppliers expected to be announced.

The move gives JustWatch a potentially significant starting audience. The company says more than 50 million people use its streaming guide each month across 140 markets, searching more than 500,000 films and television programmes available through over 1,500 streaming services.

JustWatch says it will use more than a decade of viewing demand and search data from the guide to determine which titles to acquire for the new service, with a particular focus on films and programmes that are difficult to find elsewhere.

“For over a decade, our mission has been to connect fans with their favourite films and shows, particularly the hard-to-find and previously unavailable titles,” said founder and CEO David Croyé. “With the launch of JustWatch TV, we aim to make content discovery, access and engagement even easier.”

Importantly, JustWatch isn’t abandoning its existing role as a guide to competing streaming platforms. Users will continue to be directed to titles available from other services while also being offered the option to watch or rent participating content directly through JustWatch TV.

The strategy gives JustWatch an unusual position in the streaming market, using first-party data generated by millions of searches to inform its own content acquisitions while continuing to act as a discovery service for rival platforms.
