Movistar Plus has unveiled a new content strategy aimed at boosting its subscriber base. The Spanish pay-TV platform, which currently has 3.9 million customers, up 7.3 per cent year-on-year, plans to increase its investment in Spanish films and series while continuing to integrate major international streaming services into its offer.
Under the new strategy, Movistar Plus aims to offer one Spanish film every week and an average of two Spanish series premieres a month. The company has previously set a target of reaching 26 Spanish series a year over the next three years, including 16 Movistar Plus Originals.
The strategy was presented at the San Sebastián International Film Festival by Alfonso Gómez Palacio, CEO of Movistar Plus, and Juan Andrés García Ropero, the platform’s Content Director.
“Our ambition is to grow through content, supporting talent, promoting new stories in Spanish and offering a proposition that nobody else can provide: the best original production alongside the major international platforms and the best sports offering,” said Gómez Palacio.
For 2027, Movistar Plus has confirmed series including Ardora, Veredicto, Todo lo necesario and Iruña 97, alongside second seasons of Se tiene que morir mucha gente, El Centro and El otro mundo. Its upcoming film slate includes 5 minutos más, Caza Mayor and Domani.
New projects announced include La náufraga, created, written and directed by Fernando León de Aranoa and starring Belén Cuesta, along with250 metros, directed by Daniel Monzón and starring Luis Tosar.
The expansion of original production will sit alongside Movistar Plus’s strategy of aggregating international streaming platforms, linear TV, cinema and sports within a single service.
