France Télévisions has published a new ecological transition plan targeting a further 19% reduction in its carbon footprint between 2025 and 2031.

The French public broadcaster puts its current carbon footprint at 532,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, following an 11% reduction between 2021 and 2025.

Around 62% of the total is attributed to the distribution and consumption of France Télévisions content, including the energy used by televisions, smartphones and tablets. The broadcaster acknowledges that much of this lies outside its direct control.

Emissions associated with France Télévisions’ core activities amount to 172,258 tCO₂e, around one-third of the total, and are a greater focus of its direct decarbonisation measures.

Programme acquisition represents 73,696 tCO₂e, with fiction responsible for almost half of this figure. France Télévisions says this is consequently one of the areas where it has the greatest ability to reduce emissions.

As a founding member of the Ecoprod collective, the broadcaster plans to increase the use of more sustainable production practices across fiction, live programming and news, including programmes produced to Ecoprod standards.

The measures form part of an action plan extending to 2031, developed in part through France Télévisions’ Convention for Climate and the Environment involving employees across the public broadcaster. The group says proposals emerging from the initiative account for three-quarters of the decarbonisation measures identified.

France Télévisions says its longer-term environmental targets are aligned with the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
