Tech4home (t4h.) has received two Red Dot Awards for its Notus Programmable Buttons remote control, including recognition for sustainable design.

The remote was recognised in the Home Entertainment and Sustainable Design categories. Its principal feature is a set of four programmable buttons, each incorporating a display that can be updated through software.

This allows pay-TV operators to change shortcuts after a remote has been deployed, for example when adding a streaming service, promoting particular content or replacing a content partner. It avoids having to replace hardware when previously fixed shortcut buttons become obsolete.

Tech4home says the approach can also allow shortcuts to reflect individual viewing habits and provides operators with engagement data based on their use.

“A remote control is judged every time it is picked up, long after the design award is decided,” said Graça Cândido, Co-Founder and Commercial Director at t4h. “With the Notus Programmable Buttons, we set out to build a device that would still feel right in the hand and still make sense environmentally years into an operator’s deployment.”

The Notus combines Bluetooth and infrared connectivity and includes backlighting, an RGB front LED and haptic feedback. It uses recycled materials and a USB-C rechargeable architecture rather than disposable batteries.

The ability to reprogramme the displayed shortcuts also forms part of the company’s sustainability argument, extending the useful life of the hardware as an operator’s service and content offering changes.

The Portuguese company supplies remote controls for IPTV, OTT, cable and satellite operators. It says the latest recognition extends a run of more than a decade of consecutive Red Dot Awards.
