Rocket business Blue Origin, backed by Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, has raised $10 billion (€8.7bn) in a fund-raising round with outside investors. Bezos himself has put in another $2 billion, making his overall commitment to Blue Origin to about $30 billion.

The new investment puts an overall valuation on Blue Origin to around $140 billion.

Blue origin is now a 26-year old business but has had to face some challenges, not least a failure of its New Glenn rocket in May. Nevertheless, Bezos seems determined to rival SpaceX and has invested considerably in both rocketry and satellites.

Internal projections reviewed by the WSJ suggest that Blue Origin expects revenue to climb from roughly $800 million in 2025 and $1.4 billion this year to more than $30 billion by 2030.

That revenue target depends on the success of New Glenn as well as Amazon’s LEO broadband by satellite business which is at the moment embryonic.

Blue Origin now employs some 15,000 people as it works to expand New Glenn production and rebuild its Florida launch infrastructure following a rocket’s explosion earlier this year.
