Survey: Half of Brits prefer going to the cinema alone
October 1, 2026
Half of Brits say they preferring to go to the cinema alone, as research reveals the shift in doing things solo. A national survey by mobility specialists, Muick Sandy, found that more than three-quarters (78 per cent) say they feel more comfortable doing things alone than they did five years ago, while 72 per cent have actively chosen to do something by themselves even when somebody else was available to join them.
Almost a quarter (23 per cent) say they frequently decide to go it alone, while a quarter (25 per cent) believe solo activities are now more socially acceptable than they were five years ago.
Age could also be playing a role in the shift, with more than a third (36 per cent) saying they have become more comfortable doing things alone as they’ve grown older.
For those embracing independence, having greater control is one of the biggest attractions. Almost two in five (39 per cent) say being able to go at their own pace is a reason they choose to do things alone, while 34 per cent enjoy their own company and 33 per cent value being able to make their own decisions.
Walking or hiking was the most popular solo activity (72 per cent). Followed by eating out (65 per cent), going to a pub or bar (54 per cent) and going to the cinema (50 per cent). The appetite for independence also extends further from home, with 45 per cent saying they have been on holiday abroad alone.
However, the findings reveal barriers that still prevent people from feeling comfortable going it alone. More than one in five (22 per cent) say a lack of confidence holds them back from doing more things on their own, while 20 per cent feel self-conscious about doing things alone.
Personal safety is another concern, with 19 per cent saying worries about their own safety can prevent them from enjoying solo activities.
Ben Kenny, Director at Muick Sandy, commented: “Nobody should feel like they have to put their plans on hold simply because they don’t have somebody to go with. It’s encouraging to see attitudes towards doing things alone are changing, with more people feeling comfortable making plans independently, whether that’s going for a walk, eating out or travelling somewhere new. Independence isn’t about doing everything alone. It’s about having the freedom and ability to decide what you want to do, when you want to do it, and being able to get out there and enjoy it.”
