Netflix is preparing to cut approximately 5% of its global workforce, potentially resulting in around 800 redundancies, according to reports in the United States.
The streaming company is understood to be planning a significant restructuring that could be announced as early as this week.
The proposed reductions were first reported by Puck, citing sources familiar with the plans, and subsequently corroborated by the Los Angeles Times.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the cuts would affect creative teams, including employees working on feature films.
Netflix employed approximately 16,000 full-time staff at the end of 2025, with around 68% based in the United States and Canada.
A 5% reduction would represent the company’s largest round of redundancies since 2022, when approximately 450 positions were eliminated following a slowdown in subscriber growth.
Netflix has declined to comment on the latest reports.
The proposed restructuring comes amid concerns about the company’s future growth, despite continued increases in revenues.
Speaking at Bloomberg’s Screentime conference in September, co-chief executive Ted Sarandos acknowledged that Netflix was not growing as quickly as he would like.
Viewing engagement increased by 2% year-on-year during the first half of 2026, while the company’s investment in live programming has yet to generate a comparable increase in viewing hours.
Netflix has been diversifying its business through advertising-supported subscriptions, live events and gaming as competition for viewers intensifies.
The company is due to publish its third-quarter financial results on 20 October.
