CNN has agreed a multi-year partnership with Google, providing enhanced content rights for experimental features across Google products.

The agreement will explore how generative AI can help audiences discover and engage with CNN’s journalism, while compensating the broadcaster for the use of its intellectual property.

“With this partnership we’re unlocking new pathways for audiences to access CNN’s unparalleled journalism while being compensated for the delivery and use of our unique intellectual property in connection with AI products,” said Sam Felix, CNN’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships and Business Development.

“Google’s innovation with generative AI has changed how people discover information and content, and now those tools will help us explore new ways to discover and engage audiences.”

CNN linked the announcement to Google’s news AI pilot programme. Google has described experiments including AI-generated article overviews on participating publishers’ Google News pages and audio briefings, with attribution and links to original articles. Its commercial partnerships include payments for extended display rights and content delivery methods such as APIs.

CNN has not specified which experimental features will use its content or disclosed the financial terms of the agreement.

The broadcaster said the partnership supports its strategy of pursuing commercial AI opportunities while safeguarding its intellectual property. It added that it has multiple commercial partnerships and remains in discussions with other industry participants.
