Swiss broadcasters, operators and sports organisations have launched StreamSafe, a national campaign highlighting the financial and consumer security risks associated with unauthorised IPTV services.
The initiative cites research from the Audiovisual Anti-Piracy Alliance estimating that 634,000 people in Switzerland use illegal IPTV services, equivalent to 9.4% of the population aged 16–74. That compares with a European average of 8.9%.
Members of the alliance include Nagravision, the Swiss Football League, National League, LaLiga, Bundesliga, Premier League, UEFA, CANAL+, Swisscom, blue Sport, Sky, Sunrise, mySports, CH Media and DAZN.
The campaign will run in football and ice hockey stadiums, across participating broadcasters and streaming platforms, in selected cinemas and through partners’ digital and social media channels. Players from Switzerland’s top football and ice hockey leagues will contribute video messages aimed at fans.
Alongside the impact on rights revenues, StreamSafe warns that users of unauthorised services can face phishing, malware, identity theft and misuse of payment details.
The AAPA study estimates potential annual revenue losses of up to CHF70 million for legitimate Swiss pay-TV providers. Across the EU27 and UK, it estimates 34.4 million people accessed illegal IPTV services in 2025, around 2.5 times the 2018 figure.
“Revenues from media rights are an important foundation for developing professional football in Switzerland,” said Claudius Schäfer, CEO of the Swiss Football League. “Illegal streaming puts these revenues at risk and ultimately harms the clubs and the sport as a whole.”
Denis Vaucher, CEO of the National League, said lost revenues also affected clubs’ ability to support emerging talent.
The alliance aims to challenge the perception of unauthorised streaming as a harmless way to reduce subscription costs, linking the campaign to investment in programming, production and sport.
“A lot of effort goes into every live broadcast – from reporting in the stadium to the production teams in the TV studio,” said Matthias Krieb, Vice President of mySports. “Illegal streaming weakens the foundation on which high-quality sport can be produced and presented.”
