South African pay-TV operator MultiChoice saw revenue fall 3 per cent like for like in the first nine months of trading, though the decline eased in Q3.

New owner Canal Plus reported the numbers on October 22nd. MultiChoice’s revenue rose 0.4 per cent to €1.81 billion, “notably benefitting from a material positive currency effect,” Canal+ said in its trading update.

The decline eased in the third quarter to 2 per cent y-o-y, from 3.4 per cent in the first half, which Canal+ attributed partly to “favourable comparison effects related to the sporting events line-up”. Higher revenue in most of MultiChoice’s other English-speaking markets partly offset the fall in South Africa.

Canal+ did not give precise subscriber numbers. It said its subscriber base in Africa and Asia had “normalised” in the third quarter, as expected, after a significant boost from the FIFA World Cup in the first half.

“In September, a new, simplified value proposition was launched in South Africa, providing subscribers with more content, greater choice and better value for the same price,” said Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada. “The roll-out of the new offers will continue across English- and Portuguese-speaking Africa over the coming months.”
