Irish-language broadcaster TG4 will launch TG4+ on 31 October, replacing its existing TG4 Player with a redesigned streaming service offering more than 690 box sets.

The launch coincides with the broadcaster’s 30th anniversary and forms part of its strategy to develop as a public service media organisation across broadcast and digital platforms.

TG4+ will bring together more than 9,200 programmes and 4,600 hours of content, with an updated interface and improved viewing experience. TG4 says the service will offer a wide range of programming to audiences worldwide.

The platform also adds more than 50 hours of drama with Irish-language subtitles, building on existing subtitled content including Cúla4 children’s programmes, Ros na Rún and documentaries. A dedicated search filter will help viewers find programmes with Irish-language subtitles.

Deirdre Ní Choistín, Director General of TG4, said: “Our ambition is to take a genuinely platform-neutral approach: developing and distributing programmes and stories in ways that respond to audience needs, maximise discoverability and deliver public value across broadcast and digital platforms.”

Alongside the streaming launch, TG4 is calling for implementation of the prominence provisions in Ireland’s Online Safety and Media Regulation Act 2022, arguing that public service programming must remain easy to find as audiences move towards connected televisions and internet-delivered services.

“TG4 needs to be fairly funded, and it needs to be findable. Both are essential if we are to fulfil our public service remit, sustain Irish-language creativity and ensure audiences can continue to access distinctive Irish-language programming in an increasingly competitive media environment,” said Ní Choistín.

The broadcaster will also launch a digital news service for Nuacht TG4 as part of its anniversary initiatives.

TG4 first broadcast on 31 October 1996. Its dedicated children’s channel, Cúla4, launched in 2023.
