German sports broadcaster Sport1 has resumed distribution via Vodafone Deutschland’s cable network after being unavailable for just over a week, restoring access to around 40% of German households.
The channel was switched back on overnight, although Vodafone has stressed that the arrangement is only temporary for now.
A Vodafone spokesperson confirmed the reinstatement to German industry publication DWDL, citing contractual reasons for the interruption. “As there is fundamental agreement on continuing the cooperation, Vodafone has switched Sport1 back on for the time being. We hope that the further discussions can be concluded positively soon,” the spokesperson said.
It remains unclear whether distribution will be secured on a permanent basis. The two companies are expected to continue negotiations to resolve the outstanding contractual issues.
The interruption also created difficulties for the broadcaster’s advertising business. Sport1 said it was in direct contact with advertisers and media agencies to maintain continuity and minimise potential disruption.
The return to Vodafone comes at a challenging time for Sport1 and its Swiss parent company Highlight Communications. As previously reported, the broadcaster is facing financial difficulties, while German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung recently reported planned redundancies at the channel.
Sport1 did not comment directly on the reported job cuts, instead referring to a transformation process intended to strengthen the company’s long-term competitiveness and operational performance.
The temporary loss of Vodafone distribution represented a significant setback for Sport1, particularly given the cable operator’s reach among German television households. While the channel remained available via other distribution platforms and its digital services, the restoration of cable carriage removes an important obstacle for its audience reach and advertising sales.
