Spain's pay-DTT 'not a priority'
Andrés Armas (pictured, left), director-general of Spanish digital-terrestrial association Impulsa TDT, has echoed the government’s view that pay-DTT legislation is not a priority, either for the government or for his organisation.
María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, the Spanish Vice President, last week said pay-DTT "is not a priority for the moment", referring to possible legislation on this matter.
Armas said that the issue was not a priority for his organisation either, going on to defend DTT in-the-clear. However Armas conceded "probably there will be a market fragmentation wanting different options in DTT with some users willing to pay for new services such as HD. But it's impossible everybody interested in DTT wants to pay for some content." So he said pay DTT will not be a *** factor in the DTT platform’s success.
The view from the government and Impulsa TDT will certainly reassure Sogecable, whose Digital+ satellite pay-TV platform has seen stagnant growth in recent years, while cable and IPTV services continue to grow. Any new pay-TV competitor would only hurt the Digital+ business further.
In other topics the general director said he Spanish government was "limited" to act against the sales of analogue TV sets because this legislation is up to regional governments. However, he conceded that sales of analogue TV equipment should not exist any longer in Spain.
