1971: Post strike ends with pay deal
British postal workers have gone back to work today after seven weeks on strike. The 200,000 postmen and women voted by 14-1 yesterday in favour of a deal hammered out after more than 13 hours of talks at the Department of Employment on Friday.

1950: Gas turbine car gets road test
Car manufacturers Rover have unveiled the first car powered with a gas turbine engine. JET1, a two-seater model powered by the same kind of engine used in a jet, will have its first public test drive at the Silverstone racing circuit in Northamptonshire tomorrow.

2001: Donald Campbell's speedboat recovered
Divers have raised the wreck of Donald Campbell's boat, Bluebird, from the bottom of Coniston Water in Cumbria.
The boat had lain there since the accident in 1967 which killed Campbell, 46, as he attempted to break the world water speed record.
