TechniSat hits back at cable encryption

In reaction to cable operators’ basic encryption of digital free-to-air channels, German set-top-box manufacturer TechniSat will equip its DIGIT K3 and DIGIT MF4-K series cable receivers with a remote control from July, which can operate both the set-top-box and the television set.
Cable viewers will then no longer have to use the television remote control when they switch from digital to analogue TV offers. With the move, TechniSat reacts to the controversial policy of Germany’s large cable operators such as Kabel Deutschland, Unitymedia and Tele Columbus to distribute the public broadcasters’ channels unencrypted on their digital platforms while basic encryption is employed for commercial free-to-air channels such as RTL, Sat.1 and ProSieben.
With TechniSat’s combination remote control viewers can avoid the necessary smartcards for the commercial broadcasters while saving the activation fees and further costs. They will receive the more than 20 channels offered by public broadcasters ARD and ZDF via the digital receiver, while the box will automatically revert back to analogue TV reception when switching to a commercial channel.
